The sculpture trail was first created in 1996 by nine International and Australian artists. In November 2016, 14 artists from Victoria immersed themselves in the Toolangi Forest creating artworks from natural materials provided by the forest. This artist residency was the focal point of a celebration of the trail's 20th anniversary that also facilitated the creation of sculptures by youth, and the collaborative telling of Indigenous stories of the Kulin Nation.
